Cross-border Research Centre «Environment and Health» (RCEH)
Participation of the Regional Laboratory for Public Health of “Eastern Macedonia and Thrace” in the European Territorial Cooperation Program  Bulgaria and Greece 2007-2013.

The project Cross-border Research Centre «Environment and Health» RCEH has started on April 2011. It is funded by the Operational Program «European Territorial Cooperation Greece - Bulgaria 2007- 2013». The lead partner is the Regional Health Inspectorate (RHI) Kardzhali with partners: Association «Public Coalition for Health Kardzhali» (Bulgaria) and the Regional Laboratory for Public Health of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace in Alexandroupolis (Greece) on behalf of the Hellenic Center for Disease Control and Prevention (HCDCP).


Duration
The project has a  22 months duration

Budget
Total budget is 1,977,362.2 € with the HCDCP budget equal to 119,110 €.

Objectives
The objective of the project is to establish joint actions in the field of Environmental Health to promote Public Health in the cross-border region. The project activities focus on a number of actions, such as the construction of an information exchange network, mutual transfer of expertise and field investigations to enhance interdisciplinary collaboration. These actions include the construction of a Public Health Laboratory, according to the HCDCP standards in the Bulgarian side.
The project sets the following targets:
- construction of a state-of-the-art equipped laboratory in Kardzhali
- to create a cross-border system for monitoring and analysing of the impact of the environment on human health to enable the exchange of real time information
- to build a network of cooperation between the Bulgarian and Greek authorities in the field of health and social services, to strengthen the regional research capacity in the area on environmental health issues
-Τhe Regional Laboratory for Public Health (Greece) will be equipped with a 4x4 vehicle and laboratory instrumentation that will be used for interventions in sites of Public Health interest. 

Project Manager is Assoc. Professor Dr. Jeni Staykova, MD, PhD, Director of RHI - Kardzhali.

Scientific Coordinator for the Greek side is Associate Professor T.C. Constantinidis,  MD, PhD Director of the Regional Laboratory for Public Health  Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
