OBJECT

Foodborne and waterborne diseases unit is responsible for the surveillance of the diseases transmitted via contaminated food or water.

a) diseases included in the Mandatory Notification System: salmonellosis (non-typhoid/paratyphoid), typhoid fever/paratyphoid, hepatitis A, listeriosis, shigellosis, enterohaemorragic E.coli infection (EHEC)/Shiga toxin / Vero toxin producing (STEC, VTEC), botulism, cholera
b) diseases caused by pathogens included in the Laboratory Surveillance System: Campylobacter spp., Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., VTEC, Yersinia enterocolitica, Giardia lamblia, Cryptosporidium parvum, Entamoeba histolytica.
c) clusters/outbreaks of foodborne/waterborne disease


ACTIVITIES

Main fields of actions include:
A.
The coordination of foodborne diseases’ surveillance
· reception and evaluation of foodborne diseases’ notification forms
· contact with the Health Directorates and in some cases with the Veterinary directorates of the Prefectures for the investigation and coordination of  response in sporadic cases or clusters of foodborne diseases
· coordination of the surveillance system for salmonella and shigella through specialized laboratories (Reference Centers)
· coordination oflaboratory notification of diseases

B.
Evaluation of foodborne diseases’ surveillance system
· statistical analysis of data collected through surveillance systems and assessment of the completeness of data and data quality
· design and conduct of special studies on data quality

C.
Analysis and interpretation of the collected epidemiological data
· annual reports on the epidemiological data of foodborne diseases
· drawing conclusions that can be used in planning public health actions

D.
Investigation of sporadic cases and outbreaks of foodborne diseases
· guidance and support to Health Directorates
· field investigation when needed
· conduct of analytical epidemiological studies for the investigation of outbreaks
· guidance and implementation of control measures for the protection of public health
· recording of results from epidemiological, laboratory and environmental investigation of foodborne/waterborne outbreaks in a common database

E.
Scientific advice
· response protocols in case of foodborne/waterborne sporadic cases or outbreaks
· directions/written recommendations for the implementation of public health measures (e.g. efficient handling of gastroenteritis cases among residents or staff of hotels, guidelines for the prevention and effective treatment of gastroenteritis in a camping)
· frequently asked questions (FAQs) for foodborne diseases

F.
Training of health professionals and public
· written or verbal response to questions regarding foodborne diseases. Questions may come from the public, health professionals, professionals in catering, members of the Greek parliament, international organizations, etc.
· participation in educational programs for health professionals in collaboration with the Hellenic Food Authority (HFA), the Red Cross and other agencies and the organization of training programs for health professionals working in regional units

Collaboration with other bodies
·  collaboration with the Hellenic Food Authority (HFA) and joint public health interventions
·  cooperation with the Ministry of Rural Development and Food

H.
Collaboration with international organizations
-- European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) - The European Surveillance System (TESSy) - Foodborne and Waterborne Diseases (FWD) Network:

(a) participation to the information exchange platform EPIS (Epidemic Intelligence Information System). Replies to messages concerning foodborne outbreaks in Europe, the emergence of new strains or other unusual events and posting questions
(b) participation in annual meetings
(c) participation in discussion and working groups concerning future strategies of ECDC for the improvement of response in case of international foodborne outbreaks

-- European Food Safety Authority (EFSA):
(a) sending data concerning foodborne/waterborne outbreaks and the results of their investigation on an annual basis
(b) participation in annual meetings and in about processes that may be required (e.g. changes to the database, selection of new variables, etc.)
--  World Health Organization (WHO) :
(a) communicating epidemiological data concerning: the incidence of foodborne diseases, the number of reported outbreaks and the results of their investigation

Communication of results of surveillance and investigation

· Reports to the Ministry of Health and Social Solidarity and to citizens, professionals, etc.
· presentations in conferences, meetings and working groups both in Greece and abroad
· publications in international and Greek scientific journals

J.   
Other activities

·  participation in the editorial board of KEELPNO’s newsletter
·  participation in the European Mortality Monitoring System (Euro MoMo)
·  participation in "Microbiological risks" working group of HFA for the program of Official Control of Safety and Food Quality
