Laboratory-based Epidemiological Surveillance Office

Head of the Office: Angeliki Lambrou, Epidemiologist, RN, MPH, ScD

The Laboratory-based Epidemiological Surveillance Office is responsible for the coordination and implementation of the Laboratory-based Epidemiological Surveillance System, which monitors the laboratory results of clinical specimens taken from infectious diseases patients. The pathogens monitored by the system are: Salmonella spp. Shigella spp., STEC, Campylobacter spp., Yersinia enterocolitica, Giardia lamblia, Cryptosporidium parvum, Entamoeba histolytica, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Brucella spp., Legionella pneumophila, Rotavirus, Adenovirus, Norovirus, Rubella virus, Hepatitis A virus, and Toxoplasma gondii.

The aims of the Laboratory-based Surveillance are the following:

-       timely detection of pathogens with increased probability of spreading

-       detection and confirmation of infectious diseases outbreaks

-       monitoring of trends over time

-       enhancement of other surveillance systems

Functions and Actions

Α. Pilot phase of the laboratory-based surveillance system

The laboratories of public hospitals and private diagnostic centers participate in the pilot phase of the system, which was initiated in February 2012. The number of the participating sites is gradually increasing until it reaches a sufficient number, which is representative of the geographical and population distribution of the target population of the country.

B. Evaluation of the pilot phase of the system followed by corrective/modifying actions including:

- modification of the laboratory notification forms

- changes or modifications in the database, and

- modification of the information flow

C. Maintaining databases with the laboratory results and basic demographic information

The data are maintained in an electronic database built with the use of Epi-Info software of the U.S.A. Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention.

D. Gradual addition of participating sites among laboratories of public hospitals or private diagnostic centers throughout the country

E. Data management and data assessment, including:

- data cleaning

- assessment of data completeness and data quality

F. Conduct of on-site visits coupled with training of designated health professionals

HCDCP personnel conduct on-site visits to the participating hospitals and diagnostic centers and train health professionals in implementing the laboratory-based surveillance system.

G. Design of the statistical data analysis

The analysis will be performed on a weekly basis and it will include (i) analysis of trends over time for the frequency of detection of pathogens of interest, (ii) the geographic depiction of the frequency, and (iii) stratified analysis by age, gender, nationality and by other factors included in the notification forms.
